Reset
Time for a reset. Once again, the Quicksilver 100k was canceled due to COVID-19. I’m super bummed for all of the other racers that trained so hard and even more so for the organizers who work tirelessly to make these races happen. They are losing countless hours and dollars due to this pandemic. Hopefully the end to this madness is near.
For me, it was a bit of a blessing. I’ve been nursing some knee injuries over the past month. I’m not sure how they happened but they’ve had me on the shelf. I don’t think I would have been ready if the race didn’t get canceled. The time off has given me a chance to think about my training and consider how I approach races moving forward. It even crossed my mind to stop running super long distances….that thought didn’t last long.
With no race on my schedule it was time to start looking for something to get on the calendar. I wanted something that would check these boxes:
In the near future (2-3 months away)
Not too long (Preferably a 50k)
Unlikely to get cancelled (In a location with relaxed COVID restrictions)
Not far from my home (Within 150 miles)
Challenging but not insane
I set out to find this last night and think I landed on the perfect event. I signed up for the Big Chief 50k in the Truckee/Tahoe area (https://tahoetrailrunning.com/big-chief-50k-ultra-trail-run/). The race is in July which will give me some time to get my training back. Some races in this area have already been happening so fingers crossed it stays that way. The course is a loop that looks super fun and challenging. The total elevation gain is not insane but running at ~6,500’ of elevation in the mid summer heat will certainly pose a challenge I haven’t experienced before.
I’m really excited to have something on the calendar again that I am also excited to train for. Let the training begin. Until next time…..Run a trail, be happy.
