Unofficial World Record

Unofficial World Record

All sorts of issues with todays run. I think the pizza last night set me up for failure. I made a trip to the bathroom first thing this morning. However, 3/4 of a mile in my body said think again. I had to hustle back to the house for round two. That being said my long run didn’t start until 640AM and I had an unofficial 3/4 of a mile that wasn’t recorded.

It’s Memorial Day weekend so the late start translated to letting people get out to the lake. Normally I am out early enough to beat the crowds. Today it wasn’t so bad on the way out but the way back had about 14.5 billion bikers and about 32.3 billion families who wanted to hang out on the lake. Thankfully most people are respectful and are still practiciing social distancing. However, the days of the quiet Saturday long runs are long gone. I don’t think I will see those again until next winter.

To top things off, I started to think about how to check into the local snakes since I’ve seen a few now. At mile 19 I started asking myself, “should I google, Snakes in Granite Bay or Folsom Lake Snakes.” No joke, just as I started thinking this I saw a snake out of the corner of my right eye. I jumped about 3’ sideways while screaching, “HOLY F*CK!!!!”. I almost stepped on its head. I was probably 6” away. I’m pretty sure I set the world record for longest sideways jump ever.

However, it didn’t stop there. After the sideways jump I went a couple feet further and stopped to see what it was. No surprise, it was another rattlesnake. This one had about 7 or 8 rings on his rattle….he was a decent size. At first he was just chilling where he was. He was halfway in the weeds and halfway in the trail. I started to take out my phone to take a picture when he decided he wasn’t happy I was there. He immediately coiled up into an attacking position. I nearly had to visit the little boys room again at this point. He then started slithering sideways back into the weeds while keeping a semi attacking position. What did I learn? Snakes are everywhere around here. I need to learn what types and how dangerous each one is quickly. Always keep an eye out…..as I have been. I don’t like the way snakes move….they freak me out. They are super quick. Bring an extra pair of underwear.
